The OpenMaji Project Team has participated in “Social Business – Make the difference” workshop, organized by Yunus Social Business Centre of the University of Florence and held on 28 of June 2011 at  Officina Giovani in Prato.

A social business is a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective within the highly regulated marketplace of today. Profits are used in a manner in which they may expand the company’s reach and improve the product or service to a greater extent than a traditional for-profit corporation, which is the reason why the investors receive no dividends or extra payments apart from their initial investment.

Definitely not passive people without trust in the future. An injection of enthusiasm comes from “Fabbrichiamo il presente”, the workshop of young people that enterprise, that took place yesterday at Fortezze da Basso, inside Terra Futura. It has been a meeting between 40 companies made of young people who didn’t leave the crisis to overwhelm them, and trusted in their dreams to the end. Until they became entrepreneurs of themselves. There is who converted some land of ancient vineyards into a biological cultivation, and who decided to resuscitate an old job.
They are almost all in their twenties, the guys who attended the event organized by Lama-Development and Cooperation Agency, and Mediaxion.
Between them there is someone who is working on a water potabilization system that could solve the problems of millions of people. Antonio Scribano e Lorenzo Banchini trust in it: “everything started with a thesis proposal from a
professor of our University. And now much has been done. We are in touch with research institutes around the world and we are distributing our 15 prototypes. Next Tuesday one of them will go in Kenya, and soon another one will go to Costa Rica”.
Antonio and Lorenzo, with their OpenMaji, already found a southafrican company ready to put into production the object that, looking at it, looks like a sort of peppergrinder, they joke.
“At the moment we are working from home. We do everything thanks to Internet. It just takes Skype to talk with people all around the world – Antonio smiles -. The consciousness of how difficult is to find a job adequate to our qualification drove us to invest on ourselves”.

Today, it is estimated that 3.6 million people, including 1.5 million children under the age of 5, die every year of diseases borne by unhealthy water, making it the world’s leading cause of death.

The campaign will be seen from mid-March on TV, in cinemas, on the Internet and in print. A dedicated web site, votregouttedeau.org, will gather signatures for the petition.

The exhibition, organized by Palermo Design and ADP Association, will take place at Design Hub DHUB in Barcelona, Carrer Montcada 12, Barri del Raval:

ADP, constitutes in 1978 in Barcelona, is the Catalan association of designers operating in visual communication, product, environment, theory and pedagogy and also design management, with the aim of disseminating the culture of design from a broad perspective of the sector’s interests. ADP promotes the value of cultural and professional design, and works as an encouragement for the use of design in
the corporate sector.

After Istanbul, the city of Barcelona and the Association of Barcelona’s designers have considered strategic host this year’s prize PAD banned from participating in a cultural activity that enhances the design as an element of identity and economic development in the Mediterranean.

The Award Ceremony will take place in the same day of the exhibition opening (7th April) and it will be followed by “The Design in the development of the Mediterranean countries” Conference, that will take place at Sala d’actes Design Hub on 8 of April. The debate will focus on the possible role/utility of the design in the development process of the Mediterranean countries, considering the ways in relation to the diversity between the countries and areas of this region.

The theme of the contest is: Design Mediterraneo – Mediterranean Design. It is divided into three sections: product design, visual design and photography.
Competitors must show the capacity to interpret or anticipate the transformations into the scenarios of life in Mediterranean countries, while trying to overcome stereotypes.

OpenMaji has been selected among 180 projects from 21 different countries in the mediterranean area (complete list). All winning and mentioned projects will be shown during next “Mediterranean Design 2” exhibition, that will be organized in one of the mediterranean capitals, where will be the conference “Mediterranean Design 2011″ also.
